Mission Statement
Jane Addams
My personal mission statement is based on the foundation of the personal strengths that I bring to my future career as a social worker. My personal strengths are my sense of humor, a caring personality and determination. These strengths will better enable me to assist individuals with which I will work.
I am a Caucasian male that grew up in a small rural community. As a young adult, I moved to Chattanooga and was fortunate to be exposed to a more diverse population of people. As I have furthered my education, I have become more diverse in my beliefs and world views. Social justice, both in its application to my personal life and as a future social worker, is a process in which I am committed to further educating myself as well as others.
Communication, both written and verbal, is an area that I need to continue to develop and strengthen. I am currently utilizing writing assignments and class work as an avenue to enhance these skills.
My developing practice philosophy is that I will approach clients with respect and a non-judgmental attitude. This approach has been nurtured through self-assessments, reflection and diversity classes that I am receiving as a student social worker.
I have identified strategies that will help me develop my cultural competence. Firstly, I am aware of my own biases. In deconstructing these biases, I have found that I have very little patience for social injustice and have difficulty expressing myself appropriately. I am currently soliciting fellow students’ and peers' feedback on this matter.
My plans for future learning include continuing to be a memeber of NASW. I also plan on attending as many professional meetings and utilizing learning opportunities through St. Barnabas Senior Living Services where I am currently doing my senior internship. I have enjoyed working with the aging population and feel that my professionalism has grown greatly working with such an amazing population. I plan to pursure a MSW at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville upon completion of my BSW in May, 2008.
